Laax is one of Switzerland's largest and most snow-sure ski areas with a big vertical drop, and some fantastic mountain restaurants.
It is little known in the UK outside the inner circle of the freestyle scene, yet offers a large linked ski area perfect for weekend skiers and families. Laax hosts some of the largest European events including The Brits and the Burton Freeride, appealing to a young crowd, with a buzzing scene centered around the stylish new ski in / ski out rocksresort.

The season runs from December until the end of April.

The ‘White Arena’, as the Flims Laax ski area is known, features 220km of pistes of which 70% are above 2000m, providing some of the most reliable snow conditions in the Alps.

Skiers and boarders have a great range of terrain offering some fantastic freeride and park or tree-lined pistes skiing. The Vorab glacier (3018m) provides a massive area of wide, well-groomed slopes. It takes around an hour from resort to make the assent but the spectacular panoramic views from the summit are well worth the effort. At the base of the glacier head towards Nagens for some of the best beginner and intermediate runs or for keen freeriders the resorts 40km of non-groomed pistes provide excellent powder skiing when there’s been a good dump of snow. There are pretty tree lined runs all the way into Flims and Laax with number 18 being a favourite run down into Flims. On the Crap Sogn Gion side of the mountain the focus is on park skiing with kickers, rails, boxes and half pipes varying in difficulty challenging beginners through to pro riders.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Flims village offering a variety of cuisine to suite all tastes and budgets.

These range from the Aktienbrauerei, a microbrewery serving local beer brewed onsite with a small viewing deck upstairs and Bavarian food in a lovely setting. Ristorante Pomodoro, Flims serves pasta dishes from original Italian recipes and wafer-thin pizzas with ingredients fresh from the market.

Curler Restaurant & Pub in the arena at the Waldhaus Flims serves Swiss specialties in a relaxed atmosphere with a view of the curling rink. "Älplermagronen", Zurich braised veal and "Rösti" and a nice assortment of local wines from the Graubünden domain are available. Hotel Chesa is highly recommended for its excellent fondues and for a gourmet experience try the Barga restaurant at Hotel Adula, Flims or for the ultimate in fine dining the Waldhaus Flims will pull out the stops for any special occasion.
